Nadużywanie sterydów anabolicznych
Etiologia i przyczyny
Nadużywanie sterydów anaboliczno-androgennych (AAS) stanowi poważny problem zdrowia publicznego, obejmujący około 3-4 miliony użytkowników w USA, z których około 30% rozwija zależność. Czynniki ryzyka obejmują dysmorfię mięśniową, niską samoocenę, wcześniejsze zaburzenia psychiczne oraz presję społeczną i kulturową, zwłaszcza w środowiskach sportowych i kulturystycznych.

Presja społeczna i kulturowa
Presja społeczna i kulturowa odgrywa znaczącą rolę w inicjacji i podtrzymywaniu nadużywania sterydów anabolicznych.
Czynniki biologiczne i genetyczne
Dostępność i dezinformacja
Niewystarczająca wiedza o sterydach często prowadzi do rozwoju licznych działań niepożądanych31.
Cykle i schematy dawkowania
Do najczęstszych schematów należą:
Zmiany strukturalne i funkcjonalne w mózgu
Mechanizmy uzależnienia fizycznego i psychicznego
Psychopatologia a nadużywanie sterydów anabolicznych
Zaburzenia nastroju i agresja
Zaburzenia osobowości i psychopatia
Psychoza i inne zaburzenia psychiczne
Mogą one prowadzić do wczesnych zawałów serca, udarów, guzów wątroby, niewydolności nerek i problemów psychiatrycznych87.
U mężczyzn nadużywanie sterydów anabolicznych powoduje supresję uwalniania LH i FSH, prowadząc do hamowania produkcji testosteronu, często z towarzyszącym zanikiem jąder i azoospermią95.
Do powszechnych skutków ubocznych stosowania androgenów należą ginekomastia, zmniejszenie jąder, azoospermia i bezpłodność u mężczyzn; oraz zmiany nastroju i agresja (wściekłość sterydowa), zahamowanie wzrostu i wczesne dojrzewanie100.
Sterydy anaboliczne mogą prowadzić do wielu innych powikłań fizycznych.
Znaczenie profilaktyki i leczenia
Opcje leczenia i profilaktyka wtórna

This review summarizes 10 years experience with male abusers of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). The typical user of AAS is male, aged between 20 and 40 and lifting weights. Illegal AAS are cheap and easily obtained via internet or local suppliers. AAS are mostly used in cycles with a duration between 6 and 18 weeks. Most AAS cycles contain multiple agents, used simultaneously in a dose vastly exceeding a substitution dose. Short-term clinical and biochemical side effects are well established. Long-term side effects are uncertain, but may include heart failure, mood-and anxiety disorders, hypogonadism and subfertility. […] The interaction between doctor and patient may be hampered for a number of reasons.
